In an informal research project, former Microsoft executive Linda Stone discovered that herself and 80% of her peers suffered from what she termed email apnea an unconscious holding of the breath while doing work on a screen such as checking emails.

This phenomenon and others related to breathing (e.g., rapid, shallow breathing) contribute to inordinate physiological stress, and deprives the brain of the oxygen it needs to perform in business and high-stakes corporate arenas.

One of the fastest ways to alleviate stress and enhance emotional regulation, sleep quality, focus, and productivity is to learn effective breathing exercises that can be done at the desk and at home.

This article published in 2020 in the Harvard Business Review is just one example of a growing body of literature that shows how various breathing exercises and training can serve as an effective intervention for workplace-related stress:

Managing employee stress and burnout is an ongoing concern in the corporate and business world.

According to the 2025 Gallup State of the Global Workplace report, 40% of employees and 42% of managers regularly experience stress. This includes employees and managers in on-site, remote, and hybrid roles. Interestingly, this figure is slightly higher (46%) for employees in hybrid roles:

Also according to Gallup, burnout (the result of unaddressed chronic stress) is responsible for $322 billion in turnover and lost productivity costs globally.

A landmark study by RAND Europe showed definitely that insufficient sleep results in lower functional workplace performance.

On the economic side, insufficient sleep is responsible for up to $411 billion in annual losses in the United States alone. The functional performance deficits directly caused by lack of sleep accounts for an annual of roughly 1.23 million working days in the United States.

In addition, the study found that individuals that sleep less than 6 hours per night have a 10% higher mortality risk than those who sleep between 7 - 9 hour per night.

Sleep interventions are essential for reducing mortality, improving physical and mental health outcomes, and boosting workplace performance.

Brendan pays a lot of individual attention to his students. He assisted me with a lot of problems with form I was having and is great at motivating you without being a drill sergeant about it. After helping me with the appropriate exercises for my needs, we could observe a measurable reduction in anxiety. Brendan is a qualified and engaging instructor and I highly recommend his services.

Brendan helped me develop effective breathing techniques and simple movement routines that transformed how I manage stress and anxiety at work. Brendan’s calm, practical coaching gave me a slow-breathing protocol I still use whenever stress arises.
